Dermal Fillers – Know Your Stuff!
As we age, the fat and collagen underlying our skin begins to diminish due to genetic and environmental factors. Therefore, the skin starts to sag and develop wrinkles. Dermal fillers are commercially developed products, which are injected under the skin to address wrinkles and volume loss.
There are two major groups of dermal fillers: resorbable and permanent. Collagens (Cosmoplast, Evolence), hyaluronic acid- based fillers (such as popular brands Rovolax, and Dermaline) and calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse) are resorbable, because the skin has enzymatic systems to degrade them completely.
Common side effects of dermal fillers via needle delivery Method:
Bleeding, bruising and swelling is common after the procedure. Patients should expect some degree of pain during the injection and redness for up to 36 hours after the procedure. Application of ice to the injection sites can decrease these symptoms.
Common side effects of dermal fillers via No Needle (Lipnv Air pen) delivery Method:
Thanks to the latest technology in the Hyaluron pen, downtime such as bruising and swelling is rare – but this can still happen* No needle injections are classed as a non- invasive treatment, due to the gentle puncture of the skin/lips. Be thorough with your client consultation, and be sure to ask about any underlying health issues, this will determine wether client is likely to suffer from slight bruising or pain during treatment.
Patch Testing Dermal Fillers:
Historically, double skin testing was required prior to bovine collagen being introduced into formulas (Zyderm, Zyplast) to lower the risk of a reaction. None of the modern fillers require pre-injection test, because true allergic reactions are rare.
